Managing Director

Prof. Dr. René Deplanque

Professor René Deplanque has been the managing director of FIZ CHEMIE for science and technology since 1994, supported by Thomas Berthold as the administrative head for managing the operative business.

After completing a degree in chemical engineering in Hamburg, in 1977 Deplanque attended Sir John Cass College of Guild Hall University in London, where he was awarded a master's degree in electrochemistry as well as a doctorate for his work on hydrogen absorption in aluminum and titanium alloys. Afterward he was a lecturer at the University of Cambridge for computer modeling, expert systems and multivariate statistical models in the electrochemistry and physical chemistry. In 1983 he returned to Germany, where he headed the corrosion group for the German division of Brown, Boveri & Cie and was the chief officer for organization and data processing in the German corporate division for materials technology.

In 1988 he assumed overall management responsibility for the electronic processing of Gmelin, the most comprehensive German standard reference for inorganic chemistry, and became a member of the executive management of the Gmelin Institute of the Max Planck Gesellschaft (MPG) in Frankfurt.

In 1994 Deplanque joined FIZ CHEMIE as its managing director for science. He specialized in the use of databases and Internet portals as well as the design of information and communication systems for training and continuing education. In 2000 he was awarded an honorary professorship for physical chemistry by the Technical University of Berlin.

In 2005 the supervisory board appointed Professor Deplanque as the sole managing director of FIZ CHEMIE. At the same time Thomas Berthold was appointed as a signatory and head of administration.
